Arrival

Check-in moved quickly for a weekday afternoon — perhaps ten minutes from lobby to key, with a clerk who noted my floor without fuss. The walk to the room felt longer than I expected, past conference signage and the hum of the pool corridor, but the route was well signed and the carpet absorbed most of the foot traffic noise.

After dark

The room stayed respectably dark once the curtains were drawn, though a faint corridor glow crept under the door late in the evening. I slept through without waking — a modest achievement in a property this busy — and the HVAC ran quietly enough not to intrude.

The room itself

Light entered generously from the south-facing window, and the bed sat firm in the way conference hotels often prefer — supportive rather than plush. Space felt adequate for one traveller with luggage; the view opened onto parking and prairie sky, unremarkable but honest. The first thing I noticed was the cleanliness — crisp linens, no scuff on the desk — which set a calm tone for the stay.

A small friction

The hot tub was closed both evenings I checked, despite daytime signs suggesting otherwise. It is the sort of annoyance that stays in proportion — disappointing, not ruinous — and worth knowing if soaking is part of your plan.

Bathroom notes

The shower delivered steady pressure and hot water without delay. Towels were plentiful; the vanity lighting was flat rather than flattering, which matters little at checkout time but bears mentioning for early-morning preparation.

Evening on property

After dark the building shifts character — the casino floor brightens, the restaurant fills, and families with tournament kids migrate between pool and rooms. It is lively without feeling chaotic in the hotel wing, though you are never far from the energy below.

Would I return?

For a Calgary sports weekend or a conference where proximity and a pool matter, yes — the staff alone would bring me back. For a quiet romantic escape, I would look elsewhere on the same corridor.

Checking in

The lobby handles a steady mix of conference badges and lacrosse families without visible strain. Staff greet even passers-by when the desk is quiet — a habit guests mention repeatedly, and one I saw myself. Luggage carts were available; elevators arrived within a minute both times I used them. The human touch here compensates for amenity gaps elsewhere.

Access notes

We observed step-free lobby access and wide corridor doors during our stay, but we did not verify every guest room, bathroom layout, or pool entry point. Accessibility features change with renovations and staffing.

Confirm specific accessibility needs directly with the property before you travel.

The honest verdict

  • +Staff consistently praised as helpful, friendly, and attentive at the front desk
  • Hot tub availability unreliable during evening hours
  • +Pool popular with families and tournament groups — keeps kids occupied between events
  • Rooms lack in-room microwave for reheating food
  • +Casino floor well regarded for table games and welcoming entry levels
  • +Conference spaces described as clean and professionally managed
  • Restaurant food quality variable when the venue is busy

What guests told us

★★★★☆
"Went to the Wild Horse Pud before a concert event, greated right away and our server was great, attentive, engaging. Food was alright, chalking it up to being very busy, but steak sandwich came out Luke warm and under cooked, soggy onion rings, could have sent back but very busy. All in all not a bad experience just should have made a better choice ordering when that busy I guess"

"Mixed reviews... The rooms are alright however they do not have a microwave to reheat food, which was disappointing. Our biggest upset were the hot tubs. During our 3 night stay they were rarely open in the evening. One evening, after checking during the day and seeing it was operating, we got ready and went down and they were again closed! Very frustrating. The staff were incredible though! Every person we interacted with her helpful and friendly. Each time we walked past the front desk and they were not helping someone, we were greeted."

"The casino is excellent, and the table workers are all very good here. Very friendly and most know the book or close to it for each game. Table mins are all 5$ which is great. Craps is open daily till 12am which is very nice. Wish they had one or two more dealers sometimes on for UTH and maybe some newer slots such as monopoly, kong or werewolf. Favorite casino to play tables though."

"Came to DIC for a conference, the conference spaces were nice and very clean, the staff were excellent- prompt, helpful, professional, and the food was delicious. Unfortunately I did not experience the casino or hotel spaces but I assume they’re fine."
